Identity without fixed matter

An organization does not persist because it keeps its pieces; it persists because it can continuously reorganize them.

Imagine you hear a melody. First it plays on a piano, then on a violin, then on a guitar, and finally someone whistles it while walking by. The instrument changed, the timbre changed, and even the emotional color of the sound changed. Yet you don't hesitate for a second: it's still the same melody.

Why?

The question sounds musical, but it actually opens a much larger door. It's the same one we encountered with the flame, the river, and the eddy: there are systems that change internally and still remain recognizable. Think also of a flock turning at dusk, a school of fish that compacts and opens as if breathing, or an ant colony that reroutes itself without anyone giving visible orders. Individuals come and go, move, get replaced, and yet the collective pattern holds for a time.

Here a decisive intuition appears: perhaps persistence is not, above all, a property of the pieces, but of the active configuration that connects them through time.

Put simply: matter matters, of course it matters, but in many dynamic systems it is not enough to explain why something continues to be recognizable. Matter acts as support; what persists is the organization in motion.

For centuries we have mixed two distinct ideas without drawing a clear line between them: on one hand, material persistence, where components are kept; on the other, organizational persistence, where a pattern of relations and processes is kept. In static objects, both usually coincide and nothing goes wrong. In dynamic systems, however, they begin to separate — and that is where our ordinary intuition falls short.

Perhaps that is why we have associated "being the same" with material permanence for so long. Perhaps the time has come to associate it with organizational continuity instead.

A clear analogy is a sports team. Over ten years, almost all the players, the coach, the stadium, and even part of the playing style may change. And yet fans and rivals still recognize the same club, because there is institutional, symbolic, and organizational continuity. Is it exactly the same as before? In material terms, no. Is it something else entirely? Not quite either. It persists through structural continuity, not through the permanence of components.

The same applies to a city: streets, buildings, inhabitants, activities, and rhythms all change. Yet something still makes it recognizable as that city and not another. That "something" doesn't fit in a list of parts; it looks more like a network of relationships, functions, and habits that sustain themselves and transform at the same time.

And here the most intimate question of this chapter appears: what about us?

Think for a moment about yourself. Your skin renews itself, your blood transforms, your molecules change over months and years. Even your habits, your memories, and the way you speak evolve.

What stays, then?

Let that question sit for a moment.

We won't close it here, but we can use it as a compass: understanding continuity in living systems requires looking at something more than components — it requires looking at organization, relationships, and temporal dynamics.

At this point, it is worth avoiding two symmetrical errors. The first would be to think that, because matter changes, matter doesn't matter. That is false: it always matters. The second would be to insist that everything depends on fixed components. That doesn't work for many natural phenomena either.

The useful idea lies in the balance: to understand dynamic systems we need to look at matter + organization + temporal continuity. That "plus" is key. It is not enough to ask "what is it made of?"; we must also ask "how is it sustained?", "how does it reorganize itself?", and "what keeps its coherence when a disturbance appears?" As soon as we ask those questions, we begin to move out of the language of motionless objects and into the language of organized processes.

If you watch a school of fish for a few seconds, you see it open and close like a single breath: it never stays still for an instant, but it doesn't fall apart either.

Let's look at one last small example to close. Imagine a brief sequence of four renditions of the same melody: piano, violin, guitar, and a whistled voice. The physical support changed, the specific sound waves changed, and the performance details changed. And yet you recognize it, because it keeps a structure of relationships — intervals, rhythm, contour — that stays within a certain range. What is recognizable, then, is not fixed to the support; it is tied to the continuity of an active configuration. If you alter those relationships too much — broken rhythm, unrecognizable intervals — you stop perceiving continuity and the pattern "disappears" for the listener.

There is a moment when this idea changes the way you see: when you understand that a system can continue to "be" precisely because it changes well.

It does not persist by resisting change, but by organizing it.

From there, continuity no longer looks like a frozen photograph, but like a choreography that sustains itself through time.

It is also worth being precise about what this chapter does and does not explain. It does explain why a system can remain recognizable without fixed matter, as long as it keeps dynamic organization. It does not yet explain what kinds of organization are more stable, nor how to compare, measure, and classify levels of persistence across very different systems. That part comes later.

And that is precisely why the next step becomes inevitable: if continuity can persist without fixed matter, the central question is no longer only "what is a system made of," but "what organization does it preserve" when everything moves. We need to distinguish precisely what part of a system is substance and what part is organization, and understand which of the two better explains its continuity.

It is not enough to assert that "organization matters"; we now need to specify when it matters more and why. That criterion is what prevents confusion between support and explanation. Observation experiment

Choose a familiar system with continuous internal changes (a class at school, a market, an active social feed during one day, a roundabout with traffic, an ant colony).

Before observing, write down in one or two lines:

  • What you expect to observe.
  • What you think will best explain the continuity of the system.

For 10 minutes, note:

  • What elements are replaced or change.
  • What general pattern is maintained.
  • At what moment that pattern weakens or strengthens.

After observing, add:

  • What you actually observed.
  • What changed in your explanation after observing closely.

Then write a paragraph that begins:

"The continuity of this system does not depend only on its pieces, but on..."
